The Vow Of Priority
The Vow of Priority
The Vow of Pursuit
The Vow of Partnership
The Vow of Purity
God is your “One,” your spouse is your “Two.”
Question: If you are unmarried, do you have expectations for your marriage? If you are married, did any of your expectations not get met?
The Vow of Priority
I promise that God will be my first priority and my spouse will be my second.
This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh. Genesis 2:24.
He had seven hundred wives who were princesses and three hundred who were concubines, and they turned his heart away. 1 Kings 11:3
“Absolute futility,” says the Teacher. “Everything is futile.” Ecclesiastes 12:8
When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter is this: fear God and keep his commands, because this is for all humanity. Ecclesiastes 12:13.
Desire and romance are a gift for marriage, but they cannot sustain a marriage.
Don’t use the idea of romantic love to make your spouse something they are not.
Question: how important are expectations to marriage? How often have you had to deal with unmet expectations?
The Vow of Priority
I promise that God will be my first priority and my spouse will be my second.
Live out the vow
God must be our One.
We idolize, then demonize
Do not have other gods besides me. Do not make an idol for yourself, whether in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. Exodus 20:3–4.
Protect Priorities
God is one. Spouse is two. Kids are…next.
Your kids are a temporary assignment.
Your marriage is a lifetime commitment.
I promise that God will be my first priority and my spouse will be my second.
Reflection/Prayer
Forgive me God for making you less than “One”
Strengthen me to protect my priorities.
